Starbucks Canada Eliminating Plastic Straws

Plastic straws will soon be a thing of the past at Starbucks stores worldwide.

On Monday, the company said strawless lids or alternative-material straw options will replace plastic straws at its more than 28,000 stores worldwide by 2020.

Consumers in Vancouver, B.C., will be the first in Canada to see the new strawless lids replace plastic straws later this fall, with phased rollouts across Canada to follow in 2019.

Cold-cup lids are currently used for a small number of drinks including Draft Nitro and Cold Foam at select locations in Canada. They will become the standard lid for all iced drinks except Frappuccino, which will be served with a straw made from paper or PLA compostable plastic.

For consumers who prefer or require a straw, Starbucks says they will be able to request a straw made of alternative materials for use with any cold drink. The company is currently testing paper straws in the U.K.
