Canada To Legalize Marijuana By July 1, 2018

Canada’s Liberal government will follow through on its election promise to legalize the recreational use of pot by July 1, 2018, according to a CBC News report. That symbolic date just happens to be Canada Day.

The government plans to introduce legislation during the week of April 10, according to the report.

While more details will undoubtedly be coming down the pipe in the coming days and weeks, here’s what we know so far:

  • Ottawa will secure the country’s marijuana supply and license producers
  • Ottawa will set a minimum age of 18 to buy marijuana (Provinces will be able to set higher age)
  • Provinces will control price and points of sale and distribution
  • Canadians wishing to grow their own marijuana will be limited to four plants per household
